Arrival and information
France > Southwest > La Rochelle > La Rochelle > Arrival

Finding your way around La Rochelle is straightforward. Arriving at the elaborate gare SNCF on boulevard Joffre, take avenue de Gaulle opposite to reach the town centre; on the left as you reach the waterfront you'll see the efficient tourist office, on quai de Gabut (May Mon–Sat 9am–6pm, Sun 10am–noon; June & Sept Mon–Sat 9am–7pm, Sun 11am–5pm; July & Aug Mon–Sat 9am–8pm, Sun 11am–5pm; Oct–April 9am–noon & 2–6pm, Sun 10am–noon; tel 05.46.41.14.68, www.ville-larochelle.fr), which has excellent maps and a €5.95 Museum pass covering the Nouveau Monde, the Orbigny-Bernon and the Beaux-Arts. In addition, the CDIJ Youth Centre, 14 rue des Gentilshommes (tel 05.46.41.16.36), has an information service for young people. Most things you'll want to see are in the area behind the waterfront; in effect, between the harbour and the place de Verdun, where the gare routière is situated.
