Le Bistrot d'Édouard 16 place du Parlement. Undeniably touristy place, but in a great position on a lovely square, with outdoor seating in summer. There's a good-value, three-course menu (lunch €9.15; evening €10.67) offering a choice of regional dishes, as well as standard brasserie fare. If they're full, try the slightly more upmarket sister-restaurant, L'Ombrière, next door. Closed Sun evening NovFeb.
Le Bistrot des Quinconces 4 place des Quinconces tel 05.56.52.84.56. Lively bistro which doubles as a daytime café and an early-evening tapas bar (7.308pm). In fine weather locals vie for the outdoor tables in a great spot facing the fountains. The modern, eclectic carte includes main dishes from around €10.67, with a three-course weekday lunch menu at €12.20.
Café des Arts 138 cours Victor-Hugo. This café-brasserie on the corner of rue Ste-Catherine is one of the city's few old-style cafés, its unique ambience created from faded relics of the 1940s. The food is good, too, and the kitchens stay open till 1am, while twice-monthly free jazz concerts mostly 1960s, acoustic pack them in.
Chez Dupont 45 rue de Notre-Dame tel 05.56.81.49.59. Bustling, old-fashioned restaurant in the Chartrons district, with wooden floors, old posters and waiters sporting colourful waistcoats. Prices are very reasonable, with a two-course lunch for €9.45, and full menus from €21.34.
Didier Gélineau 26 rue du Pas-St-Georges tel 05.56.52.84.25. One of the high spots of Bordeaux cuisine where you can eat exquisitely cooked, imaginative food at affordable prices. Seasonal dishes include truffles, lobster and pigeon, all beautifully presented in an elegant dining room. Menus €19.8245.73. Closed Sat lunch & Sun.
Le Mably 12 rue Mably tel 05.56.44.30.10. Informal, friendly and popular restaurant with a warm, bistro atmosphere. Choose from a variety of formules starting with a plat du jour at €8.38 or three-course menus from €18.29. The food is plentiful and of excellent quality. Closed Sun & Mon.
