France for visitors

Southern Vosges
France > Alsace > Southern Vosges

The southern Vosges cover a much greater area than the northern range, stretching as far south as Belfort in Franche-Comté. The major tourist attractions are along the Route du Vin, which follows the foot of the mountains along the western edge of the wide flat valley of the Rhine; every turn in the road reveals yet another exquisitely preserved medieval village. Many of these, such as Colmar, the main centre for the route, suffer from an overdose of visitors, so to escape from the crowds, you need to head for the hills proper, along the Route des Crêtes, which traces the central ridge of the Vosges to the west.
