Le Buerehiesel 4 parc de l'Orangerie tel 03.88.45.56.65, www.buerehiesel.com. With three Michelin stars, this outstanding restaurant, delightfully housed in a farmhouse in the Parc de l'Orangerie, is the ideal place for an extravagant bout of self-pampering. Menus €50–130.

La Choucrouterie 20 rue St-Louis, by the church of St-Louis, just across Pont St-Thomas tel 03.88.36.07.28. Choucroute specialist with menus starting at €18.30, plats from about €11. Cabaret acts. Closed Sun & first two weeks Aug.

Au Coin des Pucelles 12 rue des Pucelles tel 03.88.35.35.14. Reasonably-priced winstub popular with theatre-goers as it's open late, serving traditional fare with an original twist and reliable wines. Closed Tues and Sun.

Le Crocodile 10 rue de l'Outre tel 03.88.32.13.02, www.au-crocodile.com. The chef at this slightly starchy institution, boasting a couple of Michelin stars, invents startlingly original menus using local produce such as game, foie gras and plums. Menus €55–115.

Flam's 1 rue de l'Epine, and another at cnr of rues des Frères & du Faisan tel 03.88.75.77.44 or 03.88.36.36.90). Tarte flambée (pizza-like speciality) restaurant, very popular with locals. A good place to sample the local speciality with the €10.98 all-you-can-eat tarte flambée menu (includes dessert). Meals from €5.

S'Munsterstuewel 8 place du Marché-aux-Cochons-de-Lait tel 03.88.32.17.63, [email protected]. A very special winstub on one of the city's most attractive squares and serving both traditional and more unusual dishes till late, with excellent wines to match. Closed Sun & Mon. Meals around €40.

Le Panier du Marché 15 rue Sainte Barbe tel 03.88.32.04.07. Stylish gourmet restaurant with young clientele and a fixed menu (€25 without drinks), using seasonal ingredients to compose meals of outstanding quality. Closed Sat & Sun.

Poêles de Carottes 2 place des Meuniers tel 03.88.32.33.23. Good vegetarian restaurant in picturesque Petite France. Lunch €9, dinner €17. Closed Sun.

La Robe des Champs 4 rue de l'Écurie tel 03.88.22.36.82. Potato-fanciers will enjoy the variety of things they can do – inexpensively – with the spud here. Menu €6–20. Closed lunchtimes Sat & Sun, last week in July & first week in Aug.

Les Trois Brasseurs 22 rue des Veaux. Wonderful winstub, which brews its own beer: the enormous copper brewing equipment is part of the decor. Tarte flambée from €4.60. Other Alsatian specialities available. Happy hour 5–7pm.

La Victoire 24 quai des Pêcheurs tel 03.88.35.39.35. A popular inn, worth experiencing for its lively student ambience rather than the food. Menu from €15, plats €6.75. Closed Sat eve, Sun & first three weeks in Aug.

Zum Strissel 5 place de la Grande-Boucherie tel 03.88.32.14.73. Traditional winstub with a faithful clientele and famous for its rhubarb tart, with menus at €10–21 (€6.60 for the plat du jour). Closed Sun, Mon & one week in Feb & July.
