Saint-Nizier
The easiest of the CIMES walks is a four-hour circular walk to ST-NIZIER, just over the rim of the Vercors Massif, with a fantastic view of the whole area. Start by taking bus #5 from place Victor-Hugo in Grenoble and get off in Seyssinet village by the school. The path starts about 200m uphill from the school on the right. For most of the way you follow GR9 with its red and white waymarks. It's not difficult, but the path crosses the D106 a few times, and the continuation is not always obvious, so it's worth getting the leaflet. It's about two and a half hours to St-Nizier (return the same way) through beautiful thick woods with long views back over Grenoble to the mountains beyond. The lovely purplish martagon lily blooms in the woods in early July. For a place to stay in St-Nizier, there's the unprepossessing Hôtel Concorde (tel 04.76.53.42.61; €40–55) and a small campsite. It's a further three and a half hours (there and back) to the top of Moucherotte on GR91.
