Vanoise
Map of Vanoise

The Parc National de la Vanoise (www.vanoise.com) occupies the eastern end of the Vanoise Massif. It's extremely popular, with over 500km of marked paths, including the GR5, GR55 and GTA (Grande Traversée des Alpes), with numerous refuges along the trails. For information on the spot, the tourist offices in Modane, Val d'Isère and Bourg-St-Maurice are helpful. The Maison du Parc in Chambéry also gives advice and sells maps.

To cross the park take the GR5 from the northern edge of the transpontine section of Modane. When the trail splits, continue north on the GR55. From here the path leads to Pralognan, over the Col de la Vanoise and right across the park to the Lac de Tignes – a tremendous walk. An alternative is to stick with the GR5 (past the Refuge de l'Orgère from where a path north similarly joins up with the GR55 and the previous route), which keeps east of La Dent Parrachée mountain, and follows a great loop up towards the Refuge d'Entre-Deux-Eaux before turning south and continuing up the north flank of the Arc valley and over the Col de l'Iseran to Val d'Isère.

Alternate spellings:: vanois, vanoase, vanoize
