The gare SNCF and the gare routière (tel 04.76.87.90.31) are next door to each other at the western end of avenue Félix Viallet, just ten minutes' walk from the most interesting sections of the city, which are mainly on the left bank of the Isère. Not far from central place Grenette at 14 rue de la République, is the tourist office (Mon-Sat 9am6.30pm, Sun 10am-1pm & 2-5pm; tel 04.76.42.41.41, www.grenoble-isere-tourisme.com), where you can buy copies of the Guide DAHU (€1.53) a restaurant and nightlife guide compiled by local students and available in English and where you'll also find the local SNCF and public transport information offices. Walkers and climbers should check out the CIMES office, also known as the Bureau Info Montagne (MonFri 9amnoon & 26pm, Sat 10amnoon & 25pm; tel 04.76.42.45.90) in the Maison de la Montagne, 3 rue Raoul Blanchard, and maybe also the Club Alpin Français at 32 av Félix Viallet (Thurs 58pm, Fri 57pm; tel 04.76.87.03.73) for Hiking suggestions and detailed information on refuges.The transport network, combining bus and tram routes, has the bleak place de Verdun (a short walk southeast of the tourist office) as its hub. Single tickets for both bus and tram cost €1.20, 10-ticket strips cost €8.54, and daily passes are also available for €3.10. There is no shortage of hotels in every category in Grenoble.
